We're very gratified that [the Pyeongchang Olympic Committee] has accepted that apology.

He instead got the network in trouble for a remark that left some Koreans outraged.

During the recent Winter Olympics opening ceremony which took place in Pyeongchang, South Korea, one of the broadcasters/analysts (Joshua Cooper Ramo) made a statement which offended thousands of Koreans.

"But every Korean will tell you that Japan is a cultural and technological and economic example that has been so important to their own transformation", he added.

Japan occupied Korea from 1910-1945, which was a period of extreme difficulty for the nation and led to the split of the country into North and South Korea.

The comments infuriated many South Koreans, with some stating that they were akin to "advocating Nazi persecution of the Jews". It ended with Korea splitting into two countries at the end of World War II, a schism that remains to this day. As recently as last month Japanese Foreign Minister Taro Kono said that Tokyo could not accept South Korea's demands for additional measures regarding a 2015 bilateral agreement on the issue of Korean women forced to work in Japanese wartime brothels. Do you thank Japan for the Pearl Harbor raids? "The issue of the comfort women, the victims of Japan's wartime sexual slavery, is one of the many atrocities that occurred during that period".

Ramo has yet to apologize for his remark. NBC's social feeds quickly filled with Koreans demanding an apology.

Ramo, who has written books on China and is a director of Starbucks Corp and FedEx Corp, said as athletes paraded into the Games stadium that "every Korean will tell you that Japan is a cultural, technological and economic example that has been so important to their own transformation".

NBC and NBC Sports will air Olympic events daily up through February 25.

NBC also confirmed that Ramo's assignment to assist with Olympic coverage - which was meant to be temporary - has now been terminated.
