According to police records, 23-year-old Christopher Giles of Albuquerque, New Mexico, drove 11 hours to the couple's Texas home because he was obsessed with Turney, NBC-affiliate KXAN reports.

An armed New Mexico man broke into the house of YouTubers Megan Turney and Gavin Free last month, forcing the couple to hide in their closet and await police. When he couldn't locate them, Giles reportedly returned to his auto, but as he was backing out of the home's driveway, officers with the Austin Police Department arrived.

Giles was pronounced dead at the scene, with an initial report from the medical examiner indicated he died of a self-inflicted gunshot.

According to police, Giles died at the scene. Police described him as "single, lonely and disturbed", in the search warrant. Surveillance video showed Giles enter the home, and "based on the footage seen, it was apparent that Giles' sole intent was to cause harm to someone who resides there", the search warrant continued.

Turney and Free both gained fame making videos for YouTube - many of them video game-related - and both have worked at the Austin-based media company Rooster Teeth Productions.

In a press briefing the day of the shooting, Austin Police Department Assistant Chief Troy Gay said that two officers were there but that only one fired. Giles apparently had developed an obsession with Turney and had notes on his phone that included one that said, "I want Gavin Free to die alone, with no children", per the search warrant, which was filed last week with a New Mexico state court.

Armed with the warrant, police searched Giles' house on January 29 and seized two cellphones, a laptop, two tablets and an Xbox gaming system, Albuquerque court documents show.

Nothing was taken from the couple's home. "Heart you guys so much", Turney tweeted. They also said nothing had been stolen from the property.

"Hey everyone. I just wanted to say thanks for all the support and concern regarding the recent incident", Mr Free wrote on Twitter.

Ms Turney added: "Thank y'all so, so much for each and every kind message today and a special thank you to the Austin Police for their quick response that night and their ongoing support during this hard time".
