La revelación involucra a varios integrantes de la célebre organización, fundada en Oxford en 1942, que cada año recibe cerca de 300 millones de libras de fondos públicos británicos, pero el que más resuena es el del entonces director operativo en Haití. Según distintas estimaciones, el número de personas muertas por los sismos difiere de 50.000 a 200.000, mientras que el número de los damnificados por los temblores superó los 3 millones.

Estos hechos ocurrieron durante una misión de ayuda en Haití, más específicamente tras el terremoto de 2010.

Según The Times, el ejecutivo belga admitió los hechos. "Era una locura", comentó la fuente. El ex director en el país también fue acusado de invitar prostitutas a su piso alquilado por Oxfam, según un informe filtrado a The Times, cita el Daily Mail. No obstante, este dimitió de su puesto sin recibir medida disciplinaria alguna. Había ya denuncias de abusos contra los dos y Oxfam nunca las quiso publicitar para no dañar las donaciones de los contribuyentes.

Por su parte, Mark Goldring, cabeza de Oxfam, aceptó la renuncia de Lawrence, quien sería la segunda al mando de la organización, y lamentó su dimisión que la tachó de "decisión personal".

"Fuimos muy abiertos con el público porque nos avergonzamos del comportamiento de nuestro personal".

Contrataron prostitutas y no descartan que algunas sean menores de edad.

Bocchit Edmond, embajador de Haití en el Reino Unido, dijo que el país estaba "conmocionado y consternado" por la manera en que Oxfam permitió a los altos cargos en cuestión salir del país sin informarlos a las autoridades haitianas.

"Anunciamos públicamente, incluyendo a los medios, tanto la investigación como las medidas que tomamos como resultado de la misma", reza el comunicado, que añade que después de la investigación se creó un equipo de protección específico y una línea de denuncia confidencial.

El código de conducta de Oxfam prohíbe a sus trabajadores pagar a cambio de mantener relaciones sexuales.

La prostitución es ilegal en Haití y la edad del consentimiento son los 18 años. Cuatro trabajadores fueron despedidos y otros tres dimitieron antes del final de la investigación, aseguró la oenegé, entre ellos, Van Hauwermeiren.

Trabajadores de ayuda humanitaria de una de las organizaciones benéficas más grandes de Gran Bretaña fueron acusados de pagarle a sobrevivientes del terremoto de Haití por sexo.
