For the Olympic show, Intel's drones were programmed to paint the sky with colorful imagery, including a 3-D picture of a snowboarder that morphed into the Olympic rings. The drone performance hasn't aired yet in the USA because of time zone differences.

According to Wired, the LED-lighted, foot-long quadcopters were guided into their by Intel's Shooting Star platform. Intel holds the current record after 500 drones were flown simultaneously for a light show in Krailling, Germany, on October 7., the spokeswoman said.

The spectacular sight of 1,218 drones forming the Olympic rings during the opening ceremony of the 2018 Winter Olympics was pre-recorded.

The XXIII Olympic Winter Games is being held in Pyeongchang, South Korea from February 9 to 25.

The drone performance was put on by Intel, which has been delivering similarly impressive drone-based light performances over the last few years. Previously held by Intel's high water mark of 500 drones flying together in 2016, the 1,218 drone flight will be a historic one.

Following the PyeongChang 2018 Opening Ceremony, Intel ran a 30-second ad spot featuring the power of Intel Shooting Star drones and their unique entertainment possibilities. The drones were able to coordinate using a combination of precise coding and four billion color combination enabled by onboard LEDs.

Intel Corp. was expected to launch 300 drones as part of an extravagant light show, but those plans were scrapped.

"Because the event was organized by South Korea, I naturally thought the technology would have come from Korean tech firms".

These drones are the handy work of Intel.

Previously, South Korea's PyeongChang Olympics Organizing Committee has pledged to make the Olympics an "ICT Olympics" that highlights Korea's technological prowess on diverse fronts, be it the next-generation 5G network or robotics.
