  • Apple releases Battery Health tool for iPhones

Apple users will see yet another iOS update sometime this fall but Apple is changing up their development strategy a bit.

Despite earlier rumors that Apple intends to focus primarily on improving quality and stability of its operating systems, a new round of rumors from Bloomberg suggests iOS 12 won't be completely devoid of new features. Federighi's team will have more time to develop new features and work on under-the-hood improvements without being forced to follow a checklist of features so Apple could herald massive year-over-year leaps in terms of software. Apple has so far stuck to a punishing annual schedule for its engineers, forcing them to cram major updates into a single iOS release.

On the one hand, some features have missed their expected release date. Soon iOS 11.3 will be released which will undo the throttling of the performance on older devices. Apple is now working on an iOS update codenamed "Peace" and a macOS update called "Liberty", expected to be released as iOS 12 and macOS 10.14, respectively. While the bulk of this report is simply a rehash of the first one, with little new added, Bloomberg adds additional detail on what features Apple will be bringing to their devices over the next two years.

If Apple is slowing down its release cycle, it could be a turning point for mobile operating system. iOS and Android have been updated at an incredible pace over the past ten years.

Apple also expects to integrate iOS 11's cartoony Animojis into FaceTime, enabling participants with TrueDepth cameras to appear as various animated animals during calls. The universal apps feature will come to Macs with the upcoming macOS 10.14 known internally as "Liberty".

Although the tight deadlines and a multitude of features may not be appreciated by Apple engineers, the feature-packed updates are definitely appreciated by consumers and have kept them tied to the Apple ecosystem.

Bloomberg reported that new features, such as a revamped home screen, will not be coming in 2018. One of the most interesting, Gurman says, will enable developers to create apps that work on both macOS and iOS. The Cupertino company is reportedly switching things up for this year's batch of major updates. This wouldn't be surprising given that Apple Watch and iMessage apps can also be downloaded from the iOS App Store. Along with this, the Do Not Disturb feature will also receive an update. Moreover, it will also be possible to play AR games with multiple people.
