Airline Cancels 220 Flights After Running Low on De-Icer

  • Southwest Airlines crew members are seen de-icing an aircraft at Boston's Logan International Airport in 2014. The airline recently confirmed that a lack of de-icing fluid was responsible for flight cancellations in Chicago on Sunday

The airline proactively cancelled about 220 flights from Chicago Midway on Sunday afternoon "due to the severity of the winter weather", a spokesperson said, according to the Chicago Tribune.

Southwest Airlines Co.is working on restoring a normal schedule at Chicago's Midway Airport on Monday after canceling almost all flights Sunday because it ran out of de-icing fluid during a snow storm.

Passengers were evacuated from the plane using emergency slides, she said.

As of 9 p.m. Sunday, a total of 264 flights on all airlines had been canceled out of Midway and another 235 were canceled out of O'Hare.

A few people sustained minor injuries, though no one was hospitalized, airport officials said on Twitter. As of Monday morning, glycol used for de-icing had been replenished, according to a statement from Southwest.

The plane had 139 passengers and five crew aboard.

The carrier had encountered a similar issue before Christmas, when it was forced to cancel approximately 90 flights as harsh weather conditions prevented its de-icing crews from servicing its planes.

The airport initially said the plane had landed prior to the fire, but later corrected their tweet.

Due to a fire believed to be in the auxiliary power unit, the plane's crew made a decision to evacuate the plane.

The airport said its operations were back to normal.
