Palestinians subject to Israel's policy of "administrative detention", by which suspects can be held indefinitely without trial or charge, have announced plans to "boycott" Israeli military courts to protest their ongoing incarceration. The court has ruled that she should remain in detention until the end of her trial.

Ahed Tamimi, 17, has become an worldwide symbol of Palestinian resistance following her arrest in December a year ago, which came days after her confrontation with the Israeli soldiers. During clashes with Israeli forces, Tamimi's 14-year-old cousin, Mohammed, was shot in the head at close range by an Israeli soldier.

The video shows the cousins approaching two soldiers and telling them to leave before shoving, kicking and slapping them. As he recalled, the Palestinian teenager was arrested in the middle of the night by well-armed soldiers, and then questioned by Israeli security agents without family members or lawyers present.

"The Israeli military supposes by arresting Ahed Tamimi they can silence their activism", said Fadi Quran, a senior campaigner with the activist group Avaaz. The Israeli military judge overseeing the trial of Palestinian teenager Tamimi has ordered all proceedings to take place behind closed doors. Bassem also told ISM about the poor conditions of Ahed's imprisonment, but said that his daughter was still strong despite her treatment.

Ms Tamimi's Israeli lawyer, Gaby Lasky, said the continued occupation of the West Bank was illegal and that the trial was created to deter other Palestinian youngsters "from resisting occupation nonviolently". According to Attorney Gaby Lasky, who is representing Ahed, the best defense would be to open the trial to public scrutiny.

She said she is still waiting to receive case material from the prosecutor, and that her client did not enter a plea.

He added that European Union Foreign Policy Chief Federica Mogherini has emphasized, following her meeting with Abbas, the need to find such a mechanism, stating that the U.S. could not be excluded from any political settlement, but affirming that Washington should not have a unilateral role in managing the peace process.

Her trial, which will likely take months, has sparked huge public interest as well as some worldwide condemnation of the minor's imprisonment.

The Israeli military says the soldiers were there to stop stones being tossed at Israeli drivers.

"The Convention on the Rights of the Child, which Israel has ratified, clearly states that children are to be deprived of their liberty only as a last resort, and only for the shortest appropriate period of time", said Michael Lynk, the Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Palestinian Territory occupied since 1967. Two soldiers had entered the area by mistake, and Israeli forces were sent to rescue them.

Palestinians have flooded social media with praise and support.
