Chennai: Hours after the Madras High Court said they should call of their two-day old strike, which has caused hardship to public, transport corporation unions said on Friday their agitation would continue till their demands on wage revision were met by the Tamil Nadu government.
Earlier on the second day of the strike, the head of the Centre of Indian Trade Union, Soundararjan, had said, "We don't want to subject the public to hardship but the government is pushing us". The court intervened in the matter after a journalist filed Public Interest Litigation (PIL) against the unions strike. Temporary bus drivers and conductors are also deployed in order to release tension among the commuters over the strike. "The department will incur an additional expenditure of Rs 1000 crore per annum", he said, urging the unions to call off their strike.
Announcing their decision to continue the strike, LPF general secretary M Shamugham said that they had not got any notice from the High Court on the strike and they would face the case legally.
As many as 17 trade unions had launched an indefinite stir since Thursday night, with scores of Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC) staff joining the protest. "If the court has passed an order without out hearing our views, it amounts denial of natural justice. But they even refused that", he said. He added that the transport department's claims on the number of buses running in the city are false and also questioned if they are earning extra money by claiming to operate buses that are actually standing idle at depots and so are paying salaries to workers.
A collector, according to The Times Of India, claimed the bus services were affected least in Salem district where around 86% of government buses are operating.
The commuters in the state have been forced to depend on autos and the rental cab services, specifically on Ola, which has had a drastic hike in the fares. The trade unions demand a 2.57 percent hike while the government insisted on 2.44 percent hike. Chief minister Edappadi K.Palaniswamy held a meeting with ministers to discuss the issue.
