'This is the Netherlands, you have to answer questions'

  • Pete Hoekstra new U.S. ambassador to the Netherlands gives a statement during a press conference at his residence in The Hague Netherlands Wednesday Jan. 10 2018

"Trump's Netherlands ambassador was asked to name a person 'burned" because of Islam. He has repeatedly asserted that Europe has "no-go zones".

The comments have widely been described as inaccurate, and reflect certain conspiracies about sharia law that crop up in some circles of the far-right in the West. Apparently, Dutch reporters have actual functioning crap detectors and couldn't believe the American politician was denying the obvious truth so brazenly in front of them.

Apparently he thought the matter was closed, insisting he "would not be revisiting the issue" when he was again confronted by journalists.

But the reporters were not done with the line of questioning yet.

"Please, this is not how it works", another reporter said. "We were not getting answers, so we all kept asking it".

When HuffPost asked about the clash at this week's press conference, a U.S. State Department spokesperson pointed to a tweet that Hoekstra sent out in December addressing the interview with Nieuwsuur. Hoekstra said he had read the quote, which expresses Adams' hope that only "honest and wise men ever rule under this roof". "There are politicians that are being burned", he said.

An uncomfortable silence followed the question.

You may remember Hoekstra from his viral humiliation in December, when he was caught on camera lying about racist and unfounded statements about the threat of radical Islam.

"I'll get back to you on that question", he said.

Trouble erupted Wednesday when the new envoy refused to answer questions from Dutch reporters about his claims that Dutch Muslims had engaged in "burning cars and politicians". "Yes or no", one asked.

"The Ambassador made mistakes in 2015, made comments that should not have been made", Assistant Secretary of State for Public Affairs Steve Goldstein told reporters. It was awkward, to be honest'. "That is actually an incorrect statement", he said at that time, adding "we [in the US] would call it fake news". "I didn't call that fake news", he said.

During the exchange on Wednesday, which was captured on video, the ambassador fell silent as a series of reporters continued to query him, drawing a slew of critical headlines in the Netherlands and coverage across the world. In response, Hoekstra accused the journalist of promoting fake news.

Trump nominated Hoekstra to the position of ambassador this past July.

Hoekstra pointed to the public regrets he had made for the exchange with Zwart on Wednesday.

There's a popular right-wing narrative about the alleged spread of violent, Islamist-controlled "no-go zones" in cities in Western Europe where even police are afraid to go.
