Raiders plan to hire Tom Cable as offensive line coach

  • Gruden has 'a bullseye on my chest,' plenty to prove in Raiders return

Oakland Raiders head coach Tom Cable walks off the field after an NFL football game against the Baltimore Ravens in Oakland, Calif., Sunday, Jan. 3, 2010. The Cardinals defeated the Raiders 24-23.

That will mean a reunion between the Seahawks and Cable for the Seattle-Oakland game in London next October 14.

The 53-year-old originally joined Oakland in 2007, serving as the team's offensive line coach in 2007 and the first portion of 2008 before taking over as head coach during the latter season after Lane Kiffin was sacked.

Tom Cable is on the verge of returning to the Bay Area. Cable then led the Raiders in 2009 and 2010, and finished with a 17-27 record before former owner Al Davis elected not to renew Cable's contract. He spent the past seven seasons with the Seattle Seahawks as their assistant head coach/offensive line coach before being dismissed this month.

Among the media in attendance, Steve Wyche and James Palmer from NFL Network weighed in on the event.

In August 2009, Cable reportedly was involved in a physical altercation with defensive assistant Randy Hanson that resulted in Hanson suffering a broken jaw. Napa police did not press charges. It's also clear that the Raiders got their man in Cable.

In January 2011, Davis cited the latter situation when discussing Cable's departure. Davis docked Cable's pay in relation to that litigation.

Cable served as the Raiders' offensive line coach in 2007 and 2008 before he was promoted to interim head coach following the firing of Lane Kiffin.

Cable is a respected position coach, though the Seahawks offensive line has fallen on hard times.

This offseason, the Raiders have a decision to make with Marshawn Lynch.

ESPN's Stephen A. Smith recently chimed in on the subject and gave what he thinks is a reasonable timeline for Gruden to win a Super Bowl with the Raiders.

Gruden was introduced Tuesday as the franchise's coach.
