Pyongyang Names Delegation to Attend Talks with South Korea

The Moon Jae-in government of South Korea, which was inaugurated in May past year, offered to hold military talks with the DPRK to stop any hostile act near the military demarcation line (MDL) dividing the two Koreas and humanitarian talks for the reunion of separated families.

Under the deal announced by the foreign ministers of the two countries, Japan gave 1 billion yen ($8.8 million) to a South Korean foundation to support Korean victims, while South Korea agreed to "make efforts" to remove a comfort women monument from in front of the Japanese embassy in Seoul.

Critics say Kim may be trying to divide Seoul and Washington in a bid to weaken global pressure and sanctions over North Korea's nuclear and missile tests.

People from the two Koreas have been banned from visiting and contacting each other since the 1950-53 Korean War ended in an armistice, not a peace treaty.

"We will be as flexible as we can be", an International Olympic Committee spokesman told AFP over North Korea sending a team to the Pyeongchang Games in South Korea.

Tuesday's Lausanne summit comes days after the two Koreas agreed to hold their first official dialogue in more than two years to discuss the North's participation in the Winter Olympics.

He earlier responded to Kim's New Year's Day address by warning that he has a much bigger and more powerful "nuclear button".

The size and membership of the North Korean delegation and their accommodation - widely expected to be paid for by Seoul - will also be discussed.

Hundreds of young, good-looking female North Korean cheerleaders have created a buzz at three previous worldwide sporting events in the South.

On Saturday, North Korea Olympic body member Chang Ung said the isolated state was "likely to participate" in the Pyeongchang Games from February 9-25, Kyodo news agency reported.

The drills' suspension is something that South Korea can not accept in consideration of its relations with the US, its main ally, which is seeking increased pressure and sanctions on the North.

"For us, it's a practical matter", Mattis said to reporters, explaining that the Olympics are South Korea's largest draw of global tourism.

Haley tells ABC's "This Week" that there's "no turnaround" in the USA position.

The North Korean delegation is headed by Ri Son Gwon, a hardliner who heads a government agency that handles relations with South Korea.
