Charlotte's mother, the Duchess of Cambridge, took the adorable photos, Kensington Palace revealed in a statement.

The daughter of Prince William and Princess Kate also donned a pink backpack and pink scarf.

In September, Charlotte's older brother, Prince George, started at Thomas's Battersea, a fee-paying independent school in south London.

Charlotte will be full-time at Willcocks, at a cost of more than $AUD5000 per week.

The Willcocks Nursery School has classes for children ages 2 to 5 and includes activities such as poetry, acting, sports, cooking and music.

Princess Charlotte is going to be a middle child soon as the royal family is expecting a new addition to their family this spring, but she doesn't seem to be lacking for any attention from her family or the public.

The £14,500-a-year school is owned and run by headmistress Lavinia Taylor.

Tuition is about $18,000 for the morning and afternoon session, according to the school's website.

But it appears that you get your money's worth, based on the glowing Ofsted report. Today is the young royal's first day of nursery school.

The school is just over a ten minute walk from Prince William and Kate's home at Kensington Palace.

A spokesperson for Kensington Palace added: 'They felt it was ideal as a first step for Princess Charlotte's early education and they were impressed by the team that work there'. Online: "We are overjoyed that Princess Charlotte was seen carrying Cath Kidston's Pony Rucksack on her first day of nursery".
