  • Pfizer ends research for new Alzheimer''s, Parkinson's drugs

The move will see it back out of work in Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease, two notoriously hard areas for the industry, especially the former, which has not seen any real R&D advance in 15 years.

Pfizer Inc will discontinue research to develop new drugs aimed at the treatment of Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease, the U.S. pharmaceutical company announced on Saturday. The company said that it will re-allocate this funding to those 'areas where we have strong scientific leadership and that will allow us to provide the greatest impact for patients'. "It's telling for how hard it is to do research into neurodegenerative diseases".

Dr James Pickett, Head of Research at Alzheimer's Society, says the news comes "as a heavy blow to the estimated 46.8 million people now living with the condition across the globe".

A column in the newspaper titled, Pfizer, pocketing a big tax cut from Trump, will end investment in Alzheimer's and Parkinson's research, says the company's move also raises questions about the role of Big Pharma in drug R&D, especially for conditions that have no known treatments or those with relatively few sufferers. There is now no known cure for either disease. But even that whopping number hasn't persuaded Pfizer to stay in the race to find a cure.

An estimated 44 million people worldwide are living with Alzheimer's or dementia. By 2050, that number is expected to grow to 13.8 million Americans. The brain is the most complex organ in the body and developing drugs to treat brain diseases is a tremendous challenge, but with no new drug for dementia in the last 15 years, this will come as a heavy blow to the estimated 46.8 million people now living with the condition across the globe. Researchers from the University of Southern California recently discovered that those taking cholesterol-lowering medication were less likely to develop the disease. It found that there was a 15 per cent lower incidence of Alzheimer's disease among women who were taking a high dose of cholesterol-lowering medication, while for men in the same category there was a 12 per cent lower risk of the disease. Should pharma companies keep working for a cure no matter the cost?
