According to CMPD, as homicide detectives were searching for Bennett, the suspect showed up outside police headquarters shortly before 11 p.m. and opened fire on a group of officer not involved in the case. Jonathan Bennet opened fire on officers near the police department on January 11.

Asked about security at CMPD headquarters in light of the shooting, Putney said, "It's a public building, but we are going to have to think about how we can keep ourselves safe within it".

An officer was shot in a leg but is expected to be okay.

The Charlotte Observer reports the police said in a statement that they have put "controlled access" into place as of Friday evening.

The woman's identity hasn't been released pending notification of relatives.

Investigators believe Bennett shot and killed White and then took his infant daughter in west Charlotte Thursday afternoon. The injured officer was hospitalized, but her wound is not life-threatening.

"Unfortunately some people use that against us", Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Chief Kerr Putney said.

Bennett was considered armed and unsafe.

Bennett disappeared with his infant daughter Journei Bennett, although an Amber Alert was issued and the two-month-old was later found safe.

There is no word on what may have led to the incident. "I've never seen no aggression out of him", said Rahshawn Johnson. You know what's right. "You gotta live with it so clear your heart", said Johnson.

Bennett rap sheet includes previous charges that include assault on a female, communicating threats, and misdemeanor larceny, according to WCNC.

This marks Charlotte's first homicide of 2018.
