T-Mobile took five out of six awards given as part of OpenSignal's State of Mobile Networks report covering the wireless performance of the four national carriers in the United States in January.

For the report, which covered the fourth quarter of 2017 (October 1 to December 30), OpenSignal collected data from more than 200,000 mobile devices across 33 major cities. T-Mobile takes second place in that test. Availability of 4G is a telling metric in this test: "This metric shows the proportion of time OpenSignal users have an LTE connection available to them on each operator's network", said OpenSignal. Verizon's network speeds have returned to "pre-unlimited speed levels", according to OpenSignal, rising to an average of 17.8 Mbps. T-Mobile had the fastest 4G download speed, fastest 3G download speed, fastest overall download speed, fastest 3G latency, and best 4G availability. "While previous year the two were tied in LTE speed, T-Mobile is now clearly locked into the lead spot of OpenSignal's 4G speed rankings".

In 3G speed, T-Mobile again won our award with an average HSPA download of 3.5 Mbps, beating AT&T's average of 2.7 Mbps.

In more non-carrier specific results, the report notes that LTE is becoming much more widespread in recent years, with two companies (Verizon and T-Mobile) able to report over 90% availability now, when a year ago no company could. You can check the whole thing out right here.

Being the best U.S. mobile carrier didn't come easy. That places AT&T behind its own performance this time a year ago, making it the only company to have lost 4G performance compared to the OpenSignal February 2017 report. "That's why T-Mobile customers are the happiest in wireless".

As was noted last week, the big takeaway in the battle over the best wireless carrier should be that T-Mobile made the most of an opportunity early in the 2017 when AT&T and Verizon networks struggled with re-introductions of unlimited, but kept pushing forward even as those two caught back up. In 2017, the two largest U.S carriers, AT&T and Verizon, unleashed their unlimited data plans, which means all four major carriers now offer an unlimited data plan in some form. Across the board, each individual carrier is showing increased availability, which is excellent for the future of consumer choice in the US. T-Mobile 4G speeds have been shooting upwards steadily for the past year, and in the 4th quarter it hit a new 4G download high of 19.4 Mbps, establishing it as the clear leader in 4G speed for the second report in a row. Amazingly, T-Mobile won in all but one of them. A year ago, no US operator had a 4G availability score above 90%. That's a more substantial 16% improvement from last fall's 14.91Mbps, but still behind T-Mobile's average speed.

Speaking of Sprint, although it may still rank last in all of the above metrics, it is by far the most improved carrier throughout 2017.
