Per Yahoo Sports' Jeff Passan, there is "no deal" in place for Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Gerrit Cole to be traded to the Houston Astros. It wasn't immediately clear what Pittsburgh will receive in return.

Cole has a 59-42 record and career 3.50 ERA with the Pirates, and has recorded 734 strikeouts. The addition of Cole only makes it better as he would join a pitching staff that includes Dallas Keuchel, Justin Verlander, Lance McCullers and Charlie Morton.

Although Cole is coming off a mediocre season, the Yankees likely believed they could transform him into a strong starter by having the 27-year-old rely less on his fastball and more on his off-speed pitches.

Cole was drafted as the first overall selection by the Pirates in the 2011 Major League Baseball draft.

Cole to Houston also would be a tough blow for the New York Yankees, as the New York Daily News reported Monday that the Bronx Bombers landing the one-time All-Star was "inevitable."

Right now the Yankees have Luis Severino, Masahiro Tanaka, Sonny Gray, CC Sabathia and Jordan Montgomery in their rotation.
