Among the 28 global co-passenger satellites that were deployed into multiple orbits, 19 belong to the USA, five to South Korea and one each to Canada, France, the United Kingdom and Finland.

Mangalyaan, 2014: India joined an exclusive global club when it successfully launched the Mars Orbiter Mission on a shoestring budget that was at least 10 times lower than a similar project by the US. Thirty of the satellites were launched in an orbit 550 km about, and one 359-km above the Earth. The satellites have been placed into a 505 km polar sun-synchronous orbit. For the next 20 years, it launched various satellites for historic missions such as the Chandrayaan and Mangalyaan.

In its first mission this year, ISRO is launching its 100th satellite. The Cartosat-2 has been created to stay in its orbit for five years. "With a capability to carry up to 3 kg of payload and a total satellite mass of 11 kg, it offers huge opportunities for future use", the ISRO said.

Reacting to the news, Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted that, "the success in the New Year will bring benefits of the country's rapid strides in space technology to citizens, farmers and fishermen".

In a unique feature, they will be launched in two orbits- 30 of them in a 550km-above-earth orbit, and one in 359km-above.

Present at the Sriharikota mission centre, ISRO's AS Kiran Kumar, said, "During the last PSLV launch we had problems, today what has happened proves that the problem was properly addressed and rectified". This is the stage that is carrying 31 satellites.

India's space history reached another milestone when it marked its 100 satellite launch of the PSLV-C40 Cartosat-2 series, on Friday.

In the first space mission of 2018, ISRO successfully launched 31 satellites in a PSLV from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC) SHAR at 9.29 am. Of the 28 satellites, 19 are United States, five South Korea and one each from Canada, France, Britain and Finland.

Modi's government has been promoting a domestic space programme as a demonstration of low-priced technology and last February launched 104 satellites in a single mission, majority for foreign customers.
