Intel tells customers to stop rolling out faulty patches

Processors made by those companies are also affected by the Spectre vulnerability, but to different degrees, and with virtually the entire data center processor market to itself Intel has nowhere to go but down.

"For those concerned about system stability while we finalize the updated solutions", Shenoy added, "we are also working with our OEM partners on the option to utilize a previous version of microcode that does not display these issues, but removes the Variant 2 (Spectre) mitigations".

There is no good news out of this today, the difficulty a widespread attack is high but a targeted attack; not so much.

The company recommends that manufacturers and users "stop deployment of current versions, as they may introduce higher than expected reboots and other unpredictable system behavior", said Intel executive vice president Navin Shenoy in a blog post.

Intel pumped the brakes on updates to some of its processors Monday, telling phone and computer makers as well as users to stop updating systems until Intel finishes investigating why the patches were causing devices to reboot unexpectedly. However, it appears to be problematic for those on Broadwell or Haswell. Instead, these partners should "focus efforts on testing early versions of the updated solution so we can accelerate its release".

Ever since Intel started issuing its patch for the vulnerability on January 3, some PC users have reported that their machines were rebooting more frequently that normal.

The statement is the latest update from Intel on its messy follow up to the Spectre and Meltdown exploits, which were revealed two weeks ago and affected chips from multiple vendors. The flaws make it possible for hackers to access sensitive information, including passwords and encryption keys, from a chip's memory.

In the meantime, computer users were advised to be vigilante with security practices.

Intel has a pretty big Spectre/Meltdown problem on its hands. A couple of days later, the company acknowledged similar issues with its patches for the company's more recent Skylake and Kaby Lake CPUs.

"I think we need something better than this garbage", he wrote.
