  • Hyundai NEXO fuel-cell SUV revealed with 370 mile range

As these are still comparatively early days on the steep part of the fuel-cell-technology learning curve, the as-yet unnamed new FCEV represents a fairly major leap in terms of performance and capability.

Hyundai introduced the new Nexo fuel-cell electric with Aurora CEO Chris Urmson, left, and Ki Sang-Lee, Hyundai vice president.

The sprawling Consumer Electronics Show is increasingly a showcase for advanced-technology and zero-emission vehicles, and the Korean maker used it to show its production-ready hydrogen SUV ahead of next week's Detroit auto show. Sibling brand Kia will share the underlying fuel-cell system for a new model of its own before the end of the decade. The Nexo is Hyundai's second fuel cell SUV following the Tucson FCEV, which has received a long list of upgrades that will make it more appealing and easier to live with. It's a second generation of Hyundai fuel-cell SUVs, following the modified Tucson that has been available in the US primarily in Southern California.

Hyundai's Vice chairman and leader of R&D Woongchul Yang, announced that in a month the automaker will demonstrate a level 4 version of the Nexo in dense urban traffic.

While the infrastructure is limited right now, the likes of Hyundai, Honda and Toyota are all making a significant push with the fuel cell tech.

Hyundai to unveil next-generation fuel cell EV with autonomous features at CES 2018
Hyundai's hydrogen-powered Nexo can drive further and charge faster than a Tesla

Meanwhile, EVs can be recharged via dedicated stations or at your home or office. After a snazzy video montage, the sheet was lifted on the Hyundai NEXO. The fuel-cell stack itself generates 95 kilowatts of power, which coupled to the battery's ability to deliver 40 kW, means a total of 135 kW is available for the driver motor.

The innovations don't end there: a highway driving assistant automatically adjusts speed to ensure greater safety in limited environments, while a smart remote parking system means the vehicle can park itself. Hyundai has also incorporated a remote parking assistant in the Nexo, which can autonomously park and retrieve the vehicle. RSPA can even back a Nexo into a perpendicular parking spot while the driver stands on the curb and pushes a button on the key fob.

NEXO is just one of 18 eco vehicles that Hyundai will market by 2025, including hybrids, plug-in hybrids, battery electrics and hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles.

Like that vehicle, the Nexo will nearly surely be offered only in areas of California where drivers will be close to hydrogen fueling stations. Hyundai officials said they expect the project to help them speed up their self-driving vehicle program. It keeps some Hyundai cues, such as the same ultra-slim daytime running lights as the recently launched Kona baby SUV, but features a more complex front grille that's created to reflect the fact that there's not a combustion engine under the bonnet.
