Google today honoured with a doodle Har Gobind Khorana, the Indian man who won a Nobel prize for decoding humans' DNA. He was a member of practically the only literate family in his village - Khorana's father taught his five children to read and write. Khorana lived in India until 1945, when a government fellowship made it possible for him to go to England, where he studied for a PhD degree at the University of Liverpool. Through scholarships, Khorana eventually earned his doctorate in organic chemistry at the age of 26 - and then began his worldwide academic career, conducting research in Canada, England, and Switzerland before settling in the United States.
When Khorana grew up and attended college in the United States, he was able to gain scholarships and obtain a doctorate in organic chemistry by 1948, when he was 26 years old.
According to the biography of Khorana, he was married to Swiss national Esther Elizabeth Sibler - on whom the biography showered praises for bringing a "consistent sense of objective ... at a time when he felt out of place everywhere and at home nowhere".
After a few years, Har Gobind went to work in a university in Vancouver, Canada where he initiated his DNA research.

In 1968, Khorana shared the Nobel Price in Physiology or Medicine with two colleagues, for the discovery which shows that the nucleotides in DNA sign a code which helps the scientist to determine which amino acid needs to get produce. Throughout his academic journey, Khorana encountered many mentors and advisors whom he credited with shaping his fascination with proteins and nucleic acids. He became an American citizen in 1966 and till 1970, served as Alfred P. Sloan Professor of Biology and Chemistry at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
-But this was not his only accolade. In the same year, Har Gobind Khorana and Nirenberg also achieved Louisa Gross Horwitz Prize from Columbia University.
-Khorana died on November 9, 2011. After this, in 1973 Har Gobind Khorana develops the first synthetic gene known as a yeast RNA which gives way to the field called genetic engineering. He was survived by his children, Julia and Dave.
