Florida hack exposes 30000 Medicaid patients' confidential records, medical conditions and diagnoses

  • Medicaid data breach may have affected up to 30,000 Florida officials say

Although the Inspector General's investigation is still ongoing, preliminary findings indicate that names, Medicaid ID numbers, diagnoses, medical conditions and Social Security numbers were potentially compromised during the breach, which was traced back to a November 15 phishing email.

Officials said no other state systems or email accounts were involved and that they have launched new security training while investigators continue to examine the extent of the breach.

According to preliminary findings from the ongoing investigation, Medicaid enrollees' full names, Medicaid ID numbers, dates of birth, addresses, Social Security numbers and medical conditions and diagnoses may have been partially or fully accessed in the breach. "Although the review is ongoing, the agency believes that only approximately 6% of these individuals could be confirmed as having their Medicaid ID or social security numbers potentially accessed".

After the breach, the agency required employees to change login credentials to prevent further access and took steps to remediate the breach.

AHCA says it has no reason to believe enrollee information was misused but has offered those affected a one-year membership to Experian's IdentityWorks program. It has also provided Medicaid recipients with an agency hotline number to call.

The AHCA is now notifying all potentially affected Medicaid enrollees and is "exploring additional security options to protect against further breaches".
