European Union urges United States not to withdraw from Iran nuclear deal

Donald Trump is now expected to extend sanctions relief for the Iranian Regime that was granted as part of the 2015 nuclear pact, despite speculation that he would reimpose sanctions and effectively pull out of the deal.

Earlier, European powers urged Mr Trump to uphold that agreement, saying it was vital for worldwide security.

He did not say when, but other officials who spoke on the condition of anonymity said they expect the announcement of additional sanctions to be coordinated with what, to Trump, is the distasteful task of granting a waiver under the Iran deal he has blasted as weak and a giveaway to Iran.

"Trump is unpredictable, but I guess you have to guess that he will do what he did last time, which was to send the problem to Congress", Steinberg said.

Trump's team is not fooling anyone: They are trying to kill the nuclear deal, but in a way that will allow them to evade blame.

Trump has waived these sanctions once before, but declined in October to "certify" under U.S. law that Tehran has adequately abided by the agreement.

Trump is required to consider sanctions on Iran every 120 days.

The deal is one of several foreign policy issues where Europe's most powerful economies stand in opposition to the Trump administration. The administration would like nuclear sanctions to snap-back on Tehran if it falls back into old habits after prohibitions outlined in the deal have expired.

The EU's foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini added that the global community must also be united in preserving the deal, which she said helped make the world a safer place and prevent a nuclear arms race in the region. "E3 (Germany, France and Britain) and European Union fully aware that Iran's continued compliance (is) conditioned on full compliance by the US", Zarif added.

According to British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson, no one has so far came up with a good alternative to the 2015 nuclear deal, however, it is up to those who oppose it to propose a better option. Thus, rather than killing the wavers, they are pushing to use Iranian protesters as leverage to continue creating uncertainty regarding America's commitment to the deal, thereby increasing hesitation among Iran's potential trading partners.

Steinberg ventured a prediction, saying, "It's guess work with Trump, but If I had to put money down, and I don't want to, I would estimate that he'll decide to what he did last time, because it worked".

"There is no indication today that could call into doubt Iranian respect of the agreement", French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian told reporters in Brussels, after a meeting between the Europeans and their Iranian counterpart Javad Zarif.

"The deal is working".

'Iran is failing at every level despite the bad deal made with them by the Obama Administration, ' he said in one of his tweets. The Treasury Department recently announced new sanctions on Tehran's ballistic-missile program-even though no missiles have been launched recently and no tests have been conducted.

Critics of the deal in Congress have also proposed amending legislation to ensure that U.S. sanctions would "snap back" automatically if Iran carried out certain actions. So Tillerson and others are hoping to convince the president there's enough momentum to warrant another extension of sanctions relief and not jeopardizing the entire agreement.

The old, central bank sanctions largely cut Iran out of the worldwide financial system, and are considered to be the most powerful of the penalties imposed by the USA during the Obama era, along with global penalties for buying Iranian oil.

Six individuals briefed on the matter - two congressional aides, two administration officials and two outside experts - refused to speak publicly on the issue but said that Trump's decision is not yet official and is still subject to last-minute changes, the Associated Press reported.

Other debates center on Iran's missile testing. If he does not sign the sanctions waiver this week, the USA will be violating its end of the nuclear agreement.

European firms have moved quickly to reestablish business ties after the nuclear deal.
