Department Of Defense Makes Sure Troops Can Watch Football Despite Shutdown

  • The American Forces Network is unavailable due to the government shutdown. More

As the government shutdown enters its second day, one unexpected outcome of the stalemate arose for deployed USA military: not being able to watch the NFL Conference Championship games.

The American Forces Network, which services troops and USA government employees in foreign nations, caused a furor when it announced Saturday on its Facebook page that it was not available due to the government shutdown.

NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy offered one alternative via Twitter on Saturday, posting that "Military members can watch tomorrow's NFL games at USO Centers overseas through NFL Game Pass for free". The academy also has tennis and wrestling matches scheduled on Sunday that will likely be postponed too.

AFN's news channels and some of its radio stations stayed in service during the previous government shutdown in 2013, military news outlet Stars and Stripes reported Saturday.

The Jacksonville Jaguars take on the New England Patriots at 12:05 p.m. PST in the AFC championship game, followed by the NFC championship game pitting the Minnesota Vikings and Philadelphia Eagles at 3:40 p.m. PST. "I thank you for your patience as we work to provide you what we can within the legal restrictions of the government shutdown". The network airs American radio and television programming in Europe and other locations outside the U.S.

Those with the available resources will be able to watch the game on a stream.

The network received some angry comments on Facebook from viewers about the timing, though some of the ire was directed at members of Congress.

And while the move is a decent thing to do for troops who have become pawns in the Democrat push for amnesty for foreign nationals in the country illegally, who they fondly refer to as "DREAMers", the NFL's action still leaves a void.

Both the Republicans and the Democrats have failed the troops on this one.

It is unclear how many troops this would actually reach, or if any further measures will be taken to ensure that as many troops as possible can view the games.
