  • Chris Christie believes he would be President if Trump had not run

"And I absolutely believe if Trump had not gotten into the race, I think we would have won".

Chris Christie says the Bridgegate scandal that rocked his administration affected him more severely than losing his bid to be the 2016 Republican nominee for president.

Christie, whose second term ends this month, also defended his time as governor, despite low approval ratings during his a year ago in office.

Thus, the way Christie sees it, that means that he would've won if it wasn't for Trump.

On Friday, Christie said in an interview with The New York Times, that he didn't believe Trump had been disloyal to him and that he is still friends with the president.

Heading into the 2016 presidential election [VIDEO], one of the names at the top of the list to represent the #Republican Party was Chris Christie, the two-term governor of New Jersey. "Stop it", Christie recalled telling the business mogul, according to the report, while noting that Trump didn't bring it up again. However, in Michael Wolff's controversial new book Fire and Fury, Trump allegedly said that he wanted Christie to serve as either attorney general or chief of staff because Christie would "perform kamikaze acts for him".

After being cut off from the Trump transition process, Christie virtually disappeared from the national political discussion.

"You guys took that picture to make me look bad", Christie said.

"They're gonna miss me when I'm gone", he told NJ.com, which published photos of him lounging in a beach chair at a closed beach during the state's government shutdown last summer.

New Jersey Gov. -elect Phil Murphy (D) will be sworn in on January 16.
