Earlier today, Bloomberg reported that Google has quietly acquired a United Kingdom startup which aims to turn surfaces, such as phone displays, into speakers.
Founded in 2013, Redux Labs developed a technology that eliminates the need for small speakers in mobile phones, freeing up space for batteries or other components.
According to regulatory filings, the transaction, as a part of which Google's United Kingdom subsidiary bought all the shares of Redux holding company NVF Tech Ltd., was completed in December previous year. According to Crunchbase, Redux has also previously raised more than $5 million in funding before it was acquired by Google.
Google has remained quiet on the acquisition of Redux. The purchase price paid by Google is unknown. On Ivanov's profile page, it says that Redux achieved a "successful exit" in August 2017, but it does not state the buyer.
The company's technology is focused on "Bending waves" to produce "advanced surface audio and haptics" and improve the user experience of various devices.
The US tech giant snapped up Cambridge firm Redux which can turn screens into speakers using haptic feedback. The sound quality is said to be "decent".
With the acquisition, Google now has an extra 178 patents under its belt, which it can use to enhance its future smartphone and other devices - perhaps even future Google Home hardware. The startup was backed by Arie Capital.
Some of Redux's tech has already appeared in PCs and vehicle infotainment systems.
