Braintree MP James Cleverly handed promotion in cabinet reshuffle

British Prime Minister Theresa May named a new head of the ruling Conservatives on Monday in a reshuffle aimed at handing her government a new start after months of divisions over Brexit, scandals and an ill-judged election.

The shake-up at CCHQ comes as the Prime Minister aims to shake-up party structures and broaden the Tories' appeal.

There were a few top-level changes.

Her first act was to replace the Tory party chairman Sir Patrick McLoughlin as punishment for having spearheaded a poor campaign in the general election in June past year when the number of Conservative MPs slipped from 331 to 318, thereby depriving the Prime Minister of an overall majority in the 650-seat House of Commons. It was reported that Greening made a decision to go after refusing May's offer as Works and Pensions Secretary.

But all the big beasts - as the British media and commentators call political heavyweights - kept their jobs.

May's Cabinet reshuffle was more limited than expected with the big names all keeping their jobs, including the gaffe-prone Boris Johnson keeping his position as Foreign Secretary, the newly promoted Defence Secretary Gavin Williamson staying on and Philip Hammond hanging on as Chancellor of the Exchequer after his Autumn Statement, or budget, was received well by Tory MPs.

Sharing a tweet by Guardian journalist Gaby Hinsliff about a reshuffle which went wrong during the Blair years, he said: "That happened with me and Ed Davey". Instead, her Conservative Party now has to rely on Northern Ireland's Democratic Unionist Party to pass key legislation.

May chose former justice secretary David Lidington to replace Damian Green as Cabinet Office Minister.

He cited the need to prioritise long-term health as he is due to undergo major lung surgery within weeks. Karen Bradley, the culture secretary, replaced him. A new mutineer, the seasoned political commentator speculated.

The main opposition Labour Party described the re-shuffle as "re-arranging the deckchairs".

Theresa May, centre, with the new Tory party chairman Brandon Lewis, left, and his deputy James Cleverly right.

But Number 10's official Twitter account was forced to delete its announcement of Mr Lewis's hiring after it misspelled part of his job title "Porfolio", before re-posting a correct version.
