Apple has released today security updates to mitigate the effects of the Spectre vulnerability that affects processors deployed with Apple devices such as smartphones, tablets, and desktop computers.

Last week, security researchers revealed major flaws - called Spectre and Meltdown - in chips that affected billions of devices around the world.

"There are no known exploits impacting customers at this time", Apple said in a statement on Thursday.

When the news broke last week of two side-channel attacks - Spectre and Meltdown - Apple stated that it had already released mitigations for Meltdown in iOS 11.2, macOS 10.13.2, and tvOS 11.2, and that fixes for Spectre would follow. The software update highlights security improvements and Apple "recommends for all users". iOS 11.2.2 brings further fortifications for the mobile operating system against the Spectre vulnerability, and is available right now to all supported devices (iPhone 5s and newer, iPad Air and newer). For now, non-beta users can find iOS 11.2.2 for iPhone and iPad as a software update over-the-air through the Software Update section of the Settings app. Likewise, the macOS High Sierra 10.13.2 Supplemental Update uses similar language with regards to stamping out the Spectre threat. The Safari update also addresses Spectre risks.

Although companies continue to roll out fixes, experts say hackers may soon attempt to exploit the flaws on devices that haven't been updated. The flaws are believed to be more complicated to exploit than other common methods.

Microsoft has also issued an update for Windows users - KB4056892 - although some users are reporting problems after installing it on AMD-powered PCs.
