Aldi last week posted a 15 per cent rise in United Kingdom sales for December, taking total annual sales across the United Kingdom and Ireland above the £10bn mark for the first time ever.

United Kingdom shoppers spent nearly £500 million more on food in December 2017 than in the final month of 2016 with Tesco, in particular, achieving the largest sales growth of the Big Four in the final quarter of past year.

Among the Big Four, Tesco had the most improved performance over the final 12 weeks of the year, with sales up 3.4% year-on-year, followed by Asda at 2.1%.

Kantar said that, across the grocery retailers, households spent an average £1,054 over the period.

Asda grew sales by 2.2 per cent, Morrisons recorded 2.1 per cent of growth while Sainsbury's was up two per cent.

Tesco was the the fastest growing of the big four supermarkets in the 12 week period, helped by a 6.4% increase in sales of standard Tesco own-label.

December alone saw a record £469 million spent on premium own-label products while only 36% of spending was on items on offer this year.

The spending splurge saw the Friday before Christmas, December 22, become the busiest shopping day ever recorded with £747 million going through the tills and online.

Total grocery spending in the United Kingdom during the four weeks to 30 December hit £10.5bn, up 3.7 per cent year-on-year.

"Discounters tend to lose a little market share compared to earlier in the year as many shoppers return to the more traditional supermarkets in search of old favourites".

"Rising to the challenge, Aldi and Lidl collectively managed to attract almost one million additional households during the past three months", he added.

Mince pie sales rose by 13.2% year-on-year and alcohol sales grew by 5.1% year-on-year, with spirits up 7.6% as consumers favoured gin and whisky.

It said this had forced shops which did not sell food to discount heavily in the lead-up to Christmas to try and encourage shoppers to spend more.

Spending over the four weeks to December 30 hit £10.5 billion, a 3.7% year-on-year rise, Nielsen said, with grocery sales up 3.2% over the whole of 2017 on the previous year.

"The supermarkets did well this Christmas, particularly amid fierce price competition and shoppers starting to feel the squeeze on disposable incomes", Nielsen UK head of retailer insight Mike Watkins said.

But, it was Aldi and Lidl who were the real star performers, according to analysts Kantar Worldpanel, as both saw sales soar by 16.8%.
