  • According to Trai data as of 30 September Airtel had 23.84% share of India’s telecom market followed by Vodafone with 17.53% and Idea Cellular at 16.07% with Reliance Jio at 11.72

The Airtel Rs. 399 prepaid plan offers high-speed 1GB data per day along with unlimited calls including local, national, and roaming, along with 100 SMS per day for 84 days. Under the Rs 149 plan Airtel now offers unlimited local and STD calling, 100 SMS per day and 1GB data for the period of 28 days. Airtel has made this change in some circles, and the offer, for now, is a segmented one, meaning only select customers will be eligible for the revised Rs 399 plan.

Airtel has also revived the Rs 149 plan to give greater validity to the clients. While we were unable to see the 84 day validity limit on a Delhi Airtel number for this Rs 399 plan, Financial Express and other news publications have posted screenshots with the new validity. Now it's further supersizing the plan so that consumers get 84GB of data spread across 84 days.

The new Airtel Rs. 399 prepaid pack's benefits now compete better with those offered by the Jio Rs. 398 pack, and, outdo it in terms of validity. In Jio's case, the Rs 399 recharge has free SMS as well, though it is limited to 100 per day and the plan includes complimentary subscription to Jio's suite of apps. Earlier, the same recharge provided a validity period of 70 days. Apart from that, the company is offering unlimited calls and text messages capped at 100 per day.

The slide in Airtel's ARPU was also driven by the regulator's decision to reduce voice mobile termination rate by 57%, and was despite a 37% increase in voice usage per user per month and a fivefold increase in per user data usage to 5.3 GB per month. After the revision, the plan offers more validity. The plan again here loses a score from Jio.

Prior to that, Airtel had introduced Rs 799 plan to offer users 3.5GB data per day for 28 days.

The Rs 149 plan is still segmented and is not available to all subscribers. The Rs 448 and Rs 509 plans give users 82 and 91 days validity with unlimited calling and 1GB data per day. In a bid to outdo each other, telecom operators are coming up with revised plans on an nearly weekly basis.
