  • Google could end up owing iPhone users in the UK £200 each

Summary: A class action lawsuit for United Kingdom iPhone users was filed against Google for unlawful data collection. The complaint argues that for several months in 2011 and 2012, Google used ad-tracking cookies on the devices of Safari users, which is set by default to block such cookies.

The lawsuit, filed in London's High Court, alleges that Google unlawfully monitored users' browsing habits by secretly placing tracking cookies on Apple Inc.'s Safari browser between June 2011 and February 2012. According to the initiator of the claim of Richard Lloyd, because of the actions Google has suffered more than 5.4 million people.

A veteran consumer advocate has filed a groundbreaking lawsuit against Google in the United Kingdom, over the company's circumvention of privacy protections in Apple's Safari browser years ago. "This is ... the first case of its kind in the United Kingdom against a major tech company for misusing our valuable personal data".

"In all my years speaking up for consumers, I've rarely seen such a massive abuse of trust where so many people have no way to seek redress on their own", said Lloyd. The case being brought against Google by this campaign is what is known as a representative action, similar to a class action; where a group of people all affected by the same thing are represented by a single person's claim.

Google, nor Google You Owe Us, responded to The Daily Caller News Foundation's request for further details by time of publication. The company was fined $22.5 million back in the same year by the Federal Trade Commission in the United States for violating user privacy. "We don't believe it has any merit and we will contest it", a Google spokesperson said.

"From a procedural perspective, representative action is a long standing part of English civil procedure, but this is the first time a representative action has been used in a modern context against a tech giant due to a data breach".

Peter Vicary-Smith, chief executive of consumer rights group Which?, welcomed the campaign, saying that people had to put their trust in big corps because of the increasingly large role they play in everyone's day-to-day lives.
