Deutsche Bank Records Said to Be Subpoenaed by Mueller

  • Germany's Deutsche Bank has reportedly received a subpoena from Special Counsel Robert Mueller. Above a Deutsche Bank building in London

"We have confirmed that the news reports that the Special Counsel had subpoenaed financial records relating to the president are false", lawyer Jay Sekulow said in a statement.

But that report, based on a single anonymous source, was called into question nearly immediately by a Fox News report quoting another anonymous source near Mueller, who said there was no subpoena from Mueller's office to Deutsche Bank. It said the subpoena was received several weeks ago. "We have confirmed this with the bank and other sources", Dowd wrote in an email.

The bank, which Trump reportedly owed $300 million for his real estate business dealings, had previously rejected calls for more information about how it worked with the entrepreneur-turned-executive. Trump has denied any wrongdoing.

Separately, Deutsche Bank has lent Trump up to $170 million for the Old Post Office, a historic Washington property where he has opened a hotel.

The special counsel is investigating whether the Trump campaign colluded with Russians connected with the Kremlin in the lead-up to the 2016 election.

Deutsche Bank faces questions about a series of so-called Russian mirror trades, in which it allegedly helped Russian clients move money out of the country.

In an interview this past July Trump told The New York Times that Mueller would cross a red line if he examined his or his family's finances.

But until Mueller opts to bring his investigation into the public eye, we're unlikely to know for sure whether he's made a decision to cast his net so broadly.

On Friday Mueller charged Trump's former national security advisor Michael Flynn with lying to investigators about his contacts with Russian officials.

Democratic senators, including Dianne Feinstein, suggested after the Flynn plea that Mueller might be building an obstruction of justice case against Trump.

However, the White House is now responding to the report, shutting it down completely. In particular, Trump hailed the news that one of Mueller's aides had been removed from his job over the summer for some anti-Trump text messages.

President Trump's legal team confirms it is aware of media reports related to the subpoena, but there was no immediate comment from the White House or the president's attorneys.
