Cubs sign Tyler Chatwood to three-year deal

  • Cubs agree to $38 million 3-year deal with righty Chatwood

According to multiple sources, including Sahadev Sharma of The Athletic, the Chicago Cubs have signed right-handed starter Tyler Chatwood to a three-year contract worth $38m.

This is a good signing for the Cubs on the whole, but far from ideal.

The Chicago Cubs have made a move in the 2017 MLB Offseason.

The Cubs have rotation slots filled by Jon Lester, Kyle Hendricks and Jose Quintana.

Chatwood compiled a 40-46 record with two saves and a 4.31 ERA in six major league seasons with the Los Angeles Angels and Rockies.

Chatwood has had stark home-road splits while calling hitter-friendly Coors Field his home.

Carrie Muskat of MLB.com passed along word of the free-agent signing. He was tied for the league lead in losses despite the Rockies earning a Wild Card berth. His career high is 158 innings and he has twice undergone Tommy John surgery. The Cubs will need him to provide consistency and plenty of quality starts in 2018, a tall order for someone who has always pitched from the middle to the back end of the rotation.

The money might be a little pricey for what they'll get from Chatwood, but with Mike Minor off the market at three years for $28 million and his ability to start, it's not that much of an overpay and the Cubs would have ponied up far more to keep Arrieta. They still likely need one more arm to be added prior to Spring Training.
