  • Military Finds Additional Remains Belonging To Sgt. La David Johnson In Niger

On Tuesday the Pentagon released a written statement confirming that remains discovered by USA military and Federal Bureau of Investigation teams on November 12 were those of Army Sgt.

A military investigation team made the discovery on 12 November at the site where Army Sgt La David Johnson's body was found, United States officials said.

The additional remains of Sgt.

The deadly ambush, where Johnson and three other US soldiers lost their lives, has been described as a "massive intelligence failure" and is now the subject of probes by both the House and Senate Armed Services Committee.

Johnson's widow Myeshia and close family friend Rep. Ferederica Wilson faced a firestorm of hecklers in the days following Johnson's death after outing Trump for his insensitive remarks during a private condolence call.

His death was politicised when President Donald Trump erroneously said his predecessors had neglected to make condolence calls to the families of fallen U.S. soldiers.

"I need to see him so I will know that that is my husband", she said in an interview last month.

No other details on the discovery of additional remans were released. The investigation is expected to be completed by January.

The Pentagon is investigating his death, together with those of staff sergeants Bryan Black, Jeremiah Johnson and Dustin Wright. La David Johnson became separated from the rest of the group.

Two more American troops were wounded and five Nigerien troops were also killed in the incident.

There have been numerous factual disputes about what happened when the soldiers were killed. It's still unclear why he was left at a different location.

Under their rules of engagement, the 12 USA soldiers on the patrol "were authorized to accompany Nigerien forces when the prospects for enemy contact was unlikely", Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Marine Gen. Joseph Dunford has said.

The men were members of a team of USA advisors working with soldiers from Niger, about 40 in total, who set out to meet local village leaders that day. The soldiers were part of an operation to train local forces to combat the Boko Haram terror group, which has ties to the Islamic State and al-Qaeda.
