"We'll start shipping in the U.S., United Kingdom and Australia in early 2018", an Apple spokeswoman said via email.

Priced at $349 and launching in space gray and white, the 7-inch-tall HomePod features an Apple A8 chip, seven-tweeter array, and a 4-inch designed Apple woofer.

The delay could be related to obtaining the raw materials for the HomePod's components, as John Martellaro suggested on Friday's TMO Daily Observations podcast. It was scheduled to ship in December, Apple said at the time.

We don't have specific reasons as to why Apple chose to put back the release of the HomePod, but this likely wasn't a light decision for Apple seeing as holiday shopping season is right around the corner. Amazon created Alexa for the Echo, and the virtual assistant has gone on to be the big breakout tech star of 2017.

All that being said "early 2018" is also quite the vague target date; hopefully we won't have to wait beyond January or February. If HomePod isn't shipping by March we may be waiting until late June before it shows up on store shelves. Google and Apple, two companies that lead the mobile technological front, both have plans to bring their most powerful smart speakers to the market this holiday season; however, it seems Apple's metaphorical pie needs a little more time in the oven.
